OVERVIEW

Somewhere deep in the South Pacific towering mountains rise from a cobalt sea, their jagged cliffs plunging down to rugged shores, their flanks carpeted in deep green jungle. These are the Marquesas, among the youngest islands in French Polynesia as well as the least visited. This two-week journey explores four of these fascinating rainforested isles, balanced with the pristine soft sands and gin-clear waters of the fabled Society Islands and the fluorescent marine wonders of the Tuamotu Archipelago.

Highlights

  • Venture deep into Nuku Hiva's wildly scenic landscape to explore the spectacular Taipivai Valley, an anthropological landmark hiding ancient sacred treasures.
  • Dive in to Fakarava's incomparable bounty of marine life; the waters here are not only revered by divers the world over, but are one of only seven UNESCO Biosphere Reserves on the planet.
  • Spend the day on a private beach in Bora Bora, and consider an off-road adventure into the Moorea's lush tropical interior.

The southernmost island in the Marquesas, Fatu Hiva is wild, remote, and spectacularly beautiful. Grandiose, striking and powerful, the Marquesas are more rugged than their Polynesian sisters. On the island of Fatu Hiva, you’ll discover the famous Hanavave Bay, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Make the most of your free time to stroll among the houses and gardens of the village. Its inhabitants, specialised in the manufacture of tapa (bark cloth), will welcome you with ukulele music and traditional songs. You’ll also have the pleasure of tasting the soft and juicy citrus fruits that grow on the island.

The leaf-shaped volcanic island of Tahuata may be small, at only 19 square miles, but it’s full of surprises—in fact, its name means “sunrise” in Marquesan. With only 600 residents, you’ll immediately feel welcomed by the friendly locals as you make your way along an ancient royal walkway into the quaint village of Hapatoni. If you’re looking to take home a hand-carved tiki from the South Pacific—this is where you’ll find the perfect treasure.

Explore lush peaks, wander white-sand beaches, and marvel at the iconic views of Mount Otemanu. Take the plunge with a SCUBA excursion to see the island’s colorful coral reefs, enjoy a sunset jetboat ride, or spend a lazy afternoon on our private beach*. Like a priceless Paul Gauguin painting come to life, storied Bora Bora is colorful and unforgettable. The landscape alone will have you searching for adequate adjectives, especially once you see the lagoon—“turquoise” just doesn’t do it justice.

*Subject to availability as conditions allow. When unable to call there, we will be offering a tender to the pier and a free shuttle to Matira Beach, the island’s award-winning public beach that features restaurants, public facilities and shopping. Voted #1 in the best things to do in Bora Bora by U.S. News & World Report, Matira Beach boasts powdery white sand, waters in a thousand shades of blue, and is wonderfully uncrowded.

Paul Gauguin

Designed specifically to glide in luxury through the shallow seas of the South Pacific, The Gauguin is a small-ship cruiser’s dream. She delivers travelers to intimate ports inaccessible to larger cruise ships, all the while providing a travel experience that is nothing short of luxurious. Once on board, guests enjoy newly-decorated spacious suites and staterooms (more than 70% with private balconies), an onboard watersports marina, three dining venues, an extensive spa, and five-star service. Life on The Gauguin also reflects the beauty and rich cultural heritage of the islands she calls upon, with a warm, friendly feel, informal setting, and even a beloved troupe of Les Gauguin and Les Gauguines—local Tahitians who serve as onboard hosts and hostesses, entertainers, and storytellers.
