THE TRAVEL LADY’S GUIDE TO BOOKING FLIGHTS

FLIGHTS WITHIN CANADA
Best options are Air Canada and Westjet. Flights can be booked online at www.aircanada.com or www.westjet.com.
The pricing on the airline websites is the same pricing as all agencies have, but many agencies will charge a booking fee.

FLIGHTS TO THE UNITED STATES
Trans-border flights are best booked directly with the airlines. The reason for this is that many of the airlines are keeping their best fares for their own websites. Basically, they have ended up in competition with the online travel agencies of the world. It may take a little longer to search but once you book direct on the airline website you will have more control over your flight and will not be paying any additional fees.

FLIGHTS TO INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS
When booking an international flight there are a number of options but the key factor will be the destination itself. If travelling into Europe then Lufthansa, Air Canada and KLM offer many options for direct flights out of Calgary and good connecting time. For travel into Africa KLM is a good option although bear in mind that you may be arriving at your destination late at night. Air New Zealand offers excellent pricing and routes into Australia and New Zealand using Auckland as its hub. For travel into Asia Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines are award winning but may not always offer the most attractive pricing. Try Korean Airlines via Seoul or China Air via Taipei. Do not confuse China Air with Air China (two completely different airlines and we do not recommend Air China) Or China Southern – also not one of our top picks. Eva Air is a good alternative.

TOP FIVE TIPS FOR BOOKING YOUR OWN FLIGHT

1. Always be sure to pre-book your seat as you can sometimes be bumped from your flight if you do not have a seat selected.
2. Check the time of your connecting flight. A legal connecting time is one hour but at some airports it might be difficult to get from one terminal to another in that time.
3. Baggage charges may apply when travelling on flights into the USA. Be sure to check so you are prepared for the additional charges at the airport.
4. Names on your ticket must match the names on your travel document.
5. Minors travelling with one parent or grandparents may require notarised letters signed by both parents.
